REED, Henry; poet, radio-dramatist, translator; b 22 Feb. 1914; s of late Henry Reed and late Mary Ann Ball; unmarried. Educ: King Edward VI Sch., Aston, Birmingham; Birmingham Univ (BA 1st cl. Hons Lang. and Lit., 1934; Charles Grant Robertson Scholar, 1934; MA 1936). From then on, verse and journalism. Taught for a year before call-up in 1941; served (or rather studied in Army, 1941—42; transf. to Naval Intelligence, FO, 1942—45; released VJ day, 1945; recalled to Army, 1945; did not go, 1945; matter silently dropped, 1945. During war continued to write and publish verse and book-reviews; began occasional broadcasting; began writing radio-plays, 1946 (Premio della Radio Italiana, 1953), and doing much translation from Italian and French. Academic appts at Univ. of Washington, Seattle: Vis. Prof. of Poetry, winter quarter 1964; Asst Prof. of English, 1965-66; Vis. Prof. of Poetry, winter quarter 1967. Pye gold award (Soc. of Authors), 1979.
